The number of women around the country suffering from Nuvaring pulmonary embolism and blood clots continues to increase. One of the most serious Nuva ring side effects is a higher risk of venous thrombosis (blood clots), which could lead to a stroke or heart attack. NuvaRing is a flexible, transparent, birth control ring that is about two inches in diameter. It is inserted into the vagina and left for three weeks until it is taken out. NuvaRing is made by Organon USA. Organon USA is a pharmaceutical company owned by the multi-national conglomerate Akzo Nobel, which is headquartered in the Netherlands. NuvaRing was first approved in the Netherlands in February 2001. On October 3, 2001, NuvaRing was approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

NuvaRing releases two types of hormones – an estrogen and a progestin. It is a third generation birth control that incorporates a different form of progestin than older contraceptives called desogestrel. The vaginal walls absorb the hormones and release them into the bloodstream. The hormones are designed to prevent the ovaries from producing mature eggs. Also, the lining of the uterus becomes thinner which obstructs implantation of a fertilized egg.
